ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY | CONTEMPORARY ARTIST SHOW

Portrait of Joyce Cairns courtesy of the RSA

Based in a grandiose neo-classical building on the Mound in the heart of Edinburgh, the Royal Scottish Academy has since 1826 been championing art and architecture north of the border.

Throughout the duration of British Art Fair, the RSA are showcasing a selection of leading and emerging contemporary Scottish artists.

There’s a real mix to the show. Participants include Nigerian-born Ade Adesina, who produces intricate, visionary, largely monochrome prints warning us about climate change by depicting a bleak post-apocalyptic world; Joyce Cairns, the first female president of the RSA, who paints German Expressionist-influenced autobiographical works set on the mouth of the Don, or the banks of the Tay; and Oana Stanciu, a Romanian-born artist who uses photographs and moving images, particularly of her own body, to produce images of disturbing and slightly surrealistic tableaux vivants.

Also included are Rachel Duckhouse, Kinga Elliott, Paul Furneaux, Hetty Haxworth, Kenny Hunter, Chris Leslie, Hannah Lim, David Mach, Philip Reeves, Claire Roberts, and Arthur Watson.

Expect the unexpected.
